Olympic Update: What a day was today! We won 2 gold medals on the same day. First of is our 10km swimmer Maarten van der Weide. As if winning a gold medal isn’t enough, this 27 year old swimmer is also a cancer survivor. Six years ago he was diagnosed with leukemia and had to have treatment. He survived and got back to swimming and today must be such a victory for him.
Then there were the water polo women. I talked about them before and they won gold today as well. They beat the US and quite frankly, I don’t think anybody thought they’d even get close to the medals. They lost the first game in the tournament but regained their self confidence and made it to the final and won.
What is maybe most amazing about this team, is that the star of the final, Danielle de Bruin (scored 7 times in this game, 17 times in the whole tournament), had quit water polo after the olympics in Sydney but came back. And another star is the 19 year old goalie, Ilse van der Meijden who made 2 incredible saves in the last seconds.
So now it’s down to the hockey women to see if they can add another gold medal. The hockey men lost the semi-final and will have to play for bronze. The 4 x 100m estafette team is still in the running, but I don’t think they will make it to the finals. There is still a competitor in BMX, but I know too little of that sport to know if he has any chance at all.
One of my other bigger UFO’s is And A Forest Grew by Rosewood Manor Designs. It’s a great design and one day it will be finished. When that day will be? I have no clue. I know that I haven’t worked on it in over a year. I do have a small start however in the upperright corner of the design. Here is how far I got.
I am stitching on 40 count Newcastle cream linen with Venus threads (a substitute for DMC). Love how it is going to look. Who knows when it will be back on my stitching couch?
Check back tomorrow for more Olympic news and a Fabulous Friday.
